KIDS FIRST! gives young people the excitement and thrill of attending a film festival just for them, at an affordable price for the entire family-free. The KIDS FIRST! Film Festival 2012 screens on Sundays, June 3, 10 & 24 and July 8 & 15 at 3:00 pm in the UH Manoa Art Auditorium (parking is free on Sundays).

The KIDS FIRST! Film Festival, a project of the Coalition for Quality Children's Media, partners each year with over 150 venues nationwide, reaching an audience of more than one million people, making it the largest kids film festival in the world. Curated locally by UH Manoa's Outreach College to appeal to Hawai'i audiences, KIDS FIRST! films are age-appropriate groupings of films that entertain through a balance of animation and live action, plus varied themes from different cultures. To add to the festivities, door prizes are awarded at all screenings.

This summer's line-up includes films with broad appeal for toddlers, tweens, teens, and grown-ups too. Programs include feature-length films as well as award-winning shorts. Here are the highlights:

June 3: Animated short about a boy who wants to be a dog with the full-length family film, Miss Minoes, about a cat who turns into a girl. Based on the children's book by Annie M.G. Schmidt, the film was hugely popular when released in 2001 in the Netherlands (this newly released version is dubbed in English), received international awards, and was designated a New York Times Critics' Pick.

June 10: From auteur director Yoichi Sai, based on a true story, feature film Quill: The Life of a Guide Dog will have its U.S. premiere in mid-May, 2012.

June 24: Six short films for ages 3-7, including international favorites Hello Kitty and Babar, films from the U.K. and Australia, and a couple of ecology-minded puppets.

July 8: Award-winning short animated and live-action films for ages 5-12 from Here (locally and mainland produced), There (from Australia, Canada, Vietnam, Iran and Italy) & Beyond (outer space).

Sustainable Coastlines Makapu'u Beach Clean Up - posted April 16, 2012

Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, a non-profit organization with the mission of "Inspiring local communities to care for their coastlines through hands-on beach clean ups of the Hawaiian Islands," is calling for volunteers of all ages to help with a large-scale clean up of the coastal area from Makapu'u to Kaupo Bay on Sunday, April 22. With the recent strong trade winds also came a large amount of marine debris washing upon the shoreline, therefore this stunning location needs our kokua. The Makapu'u event is being held in celebration of Earth Day, and it also marks Sustainable Coastlines' one-year anniversary.

Volunteers are asked to report at Makapu'u at 9:30 am, where they will be organized into teams and assigned specific zones to clean. Quantifying sheets will be used to categorize the type and amount of rubbish, which is then reported to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and other agencies. All materials, including gloves, trash bags, sunscreen, and water, will be provided.

Following the clean up, participants are invited to Sea Life Park's Makapu'u Meadows from noon to 5:00 pm, where the special volunteers' entry fee of $5 gets them entrance to the event and all Sea Life Park exhibits. Doors are also open to the general public at $15 adult admission and $10 junior admission (ages 3 -12) with an empty Coca Cola product to be recycled (one person per recycled item, other restrictions apply).

Live music sets the stage for an afternoon of family fun and education, featuring a variety of nonprofit booths, educational displays, and several guest speakers including Carey Morishige, Pacific Islands regional coordinator of the NOAA Marine Debris program. Activities include games, art, and face painting for keiki and raffle prizes like surfing lessons, clothing, and handboards. Entertainment is provided by a variety of musical acts, with a special appearance by the Grammy-award winning Honoka'a Jazz Band, scheduled at noon to kickstart the festivities. Mike Love & Paula Fuga play mid-day, delivering acoustic roots reggae with 'aina-centric lyrics and smooth melodies.

Leeward Community College Job Fair - posted March 28, 2012

Hawaii Energy, the conservation and efficiency program for Hawaii, Honolulu and Maui counties, has teamed up with Leeward Community College (Leeward CC) and University of Hawaii West Oahu for the 10th Annual Leeward Career, College and Job Fair taking place April 4, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the Pearl City campus. Through Hawaii Energy's sponsorship, this year's event will focus on "Clean Energy Connections," which are clean energy career and training opportunities for attendees and participants. As part of its sponsorship, Hawaii Energy is encouraging residents and employers from all sectors to mark their calendars and participate in the event.

The job fair will provide a venue for employers and career programs to distribute information while also giving attendees the opportunity to explore and ask questions in a welcoming environment. Event organizers are anticipating participation from more than 70 employers and 30 college programs, and attendance of nearly 2,000 job seekers. The purpose of the job fair is to provide access to college programs and employment opportunities from local businesses for both students and the general public.

"Conservation and efficiency are no longer just buzzwords reserved for environmentalists, they are now a growing part of business vernacular," stated Hawaii Energy Transformational Outreach Specialist Malama Minn. "The individuals and businesses that will play a critical role in shaping our future are those that understand conservation and efficiency. I applaud the University of Hawaii System for taking a leadership role in bringing employers and employees together under this theme, because they are providing those that participate in the job fair with a definite advantage in the marketplace."

The clean energy sector in Hawaii, which conservation and efficiency are a major component of, is a major growth area. To put this into perspective, the State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations' Hawaii Green Jobs Initiative identifies 11,145 current positions related to the clean energy sector and projects a 26 percent increase in 2012. With this, Hawaii ranks third in the nation in clean energy job growth.

"As we celebrate our 10th year, we are keeping an eye on the future, and that future is clean energy," stated Sandy Hoshino, Job Prep Coordinator at Leeward Community College. "We envision a day when a majority of the jobs in Hawaii, no matter the task, will be influenced by the conscious use and conservation of energy in some form or fashion. That's why, for the first time ever, we are partnering with Hawaii Energy to help employers and employees make that clean energy connection."

To capture a majority of these and other upcoming job opportunities locally, Hawaii residents should plan on attending the 10th Annual Career, College and Job Fair. For more information regarding the job fair, residents and employers are encouraged to visit www.leeward.hawaii.edu/jobs-events.

Rise Above Plastics - posted March 27, 2012

On Wednesday, March 28 at 5:30 pm at the ING DIRECT cafÈ in Waikiki, Stuart Coleman, Surfrider Foundation Hawaii Chapters Coordinator, speaks about the organization's Rise Above Plastics Campaign as part of the HCA's free lecture series.

Coleman, in coordination with the Oahu Chapter, is working to educate people about the environmental dangers of plastic marine debris and the foundations efforts to reduce the proliferation of single-use plastic bottles and bags. It is estimated that in the North Pacific Gyre, 100 million tons of plastic swirl in a vortex of "toxic soup." There is so much plastic in the water that in some areas it outnumbers zooplankton by more than six to one! This plastic ends up in the stomachs of fish, birds and all kinds of marine life. In fact, one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die globally each year due to ingestion of or entanglement in plastics. Although these petroleum-based products never biodegrade, they do begin to photo-degrade into smaller pieces, and then fish feed on the toxic micro-plastics. This is not only a tragic environmental hazard, but it also poses a dramatic human health issue as humans consume these contaminated fish.

Precipitation Extremes - posted February 28, 2012

On Wednesday, February 29 at 5:30 pm at the ING DIRECT cafe in Waikiki, hear Dr. Pao-Shin Chu, state climatologist and professor at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, speak about how the precipitation extremes are changing in relation to overall climate change in her free lecture as part of the HCA's free lecture series, "Precipitation Extremes In The Hawaiian Islands Under A Changing Climate."

Trends of climate change indices related to extreme precipitation events in the Hawaiian Islands are investigated using daily observational records over the last 60 years. These indices include daily precipitation intensity, total number of days with daily precipitation greater than one inch, consecutive 5-day precipitation amounts, and consecutive dry days. The upward trends of drought conditions are predominant on all the major islands and the results suggest a tendency for increased frequency of heavy precipitation events but a decrease in precipitation intensity for the southern shoreline of O'ahu during the next 30 years (2011-2040).

Combat Wildlife Crimes - posted January 17, 2012

The Humane Society of the United States and The Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust are teaming up with the Hawai'i Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement to combat poaching and designated wildlife-related crimes by sponsoring a toll-free, confidential reward tip line, 1-855-DLNR-TIP. The statewide tip line allows citizens to confidentially report information about poaching crimes to law enforcement. The HSUS will offer $2,500 rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for specific, predetermined cases. The first case under this new reward program and tip line involves three monk seals killed on Moloka'i and a fourth monk seal found killed on Kaua'i. Necropsies performed on three of the four seals confirmed the deaths were suspicious. The fourth case is pending additional information. Anyone with information about these cases is asked to call the confidential reward tip line.

Along with The HSUS's $2,500 reward offering, the Conservation Council for Hawai'i, the Center for Biological Diversity and the Marine Conservation Institute are collectively offering $2,500 for each incident. A generous anonymous local donor has offered to match these rewards, bringing the reward total up to $30,000, or $10,000 per seal.

"We are pleased to support the critical work of DOCARE by funding a reward program and tip line for information on illegal wildlife-related offenses," said Inga Gibson, Hawai'i state director for The HSUS. "We must be a voice for these innocent animal victims and encourage anyone with information to please call the confidential tip line."

Wildlife officials estimate that tens of millions of animals are poached annually nationwide, but less than 5 percent of poached animals come to the attention of law enforcement. Wildlife officials report that poachers often commit other crimes as well.

"We thank The HSUS for their sponsorship of this new program to help protect Hawaii's precious wildlife," said Randy Awo, DOCARE chief. "Our hope is that the reward program will deter future wildlife crimes and also encourage the community to become more involved in protecting our environment and reporting wildlife offenses."
